Greed

A graphical redesign of Donald X. Vaccarino’s card game Greed, making costs and requirements visual and giving the cards, cash, and rules references a consistent style.

The original Greed is a great game that had a pretty rough visual design. I ended up doing a full visual overhaul without changing any rules. What bothered me most was how “Cost” and “Need” lines mixed words, numbers, and icons into the card text, making them difficult to tell apart.

I redesigned the cards to give costs and requirements their own visual treatment, using a coloured strip beside the effect text. Cost bars are red to clearly show that you’re paying some kind of cost. Green is for the Needs, meaning something allows these cards. My rules reference cards use Spot instead, as a clearer keyword indicating you just need to have something in front of you.

Colour and icons also distinguish the three card types: Thugs, Holdings, and Actions.

The cash cards use a shared green banknote motif, with the denominations displayed across contrasting coloured bands.

I also made rules references for 2 players and 3-5 players.

What I would change now

I would make the numbers in the top-right corners even smaller. They’re used rarely, but their prominence distracts some players.

I also wish I had included illustrations. The current version is very playable, but it feels a bit too sparse.
