The cards in my version are 67×44 mm, roughly half the size of standard playing cards. Had them printed on plastic because Red7 gets shuffled a lot, and a pocket version is likely to get knocked around even more.

I designed the cards from scratch for the smaller format rather than trying to shrink the original design.

Rules cards

The rules also had to fit the format. Red7 is elegant enough that most of the game compresses well, but I left out two parts I rarely use:

  • No rules for icons because that’s an optional variant
  • No rules for multi-round scoring because I mostly play this as a less serious game, bit like Love Letter

Function dictates form at this size. Cards in your hand need to be immediately readable so all the important information stayed in the “spine” like the original game.

Cards in your hand

But cards in front of other players need to be even more clear, so I made the decision to put the larger numbers facing others, rather than the player.
Charmingly enough, the big numbers are ~same size as original game.

How the cards look in front of other players

Even though the icons don’t have rules included, it felt right to put them on the cards anyway, just in case. Low-key proud of how I made the icons work transparently across the full rainbow 🌈

The finished version plays just like regular Red 7, but fits in a pouch and is much easier to carry around.
